Podcasts for Writers
Listening to podcasts is a great, free way to level up as a writer! These are podcasts that I love, and they include solid advice for storytellers. I am not affiliated with any of them except The Worldbuilder's Tavern, which I co-host.
The Happy Writer
Author Marissa Meyer interviews guests, usually other authors, about writing and publishing. She is very cheerful, positive, and encouraging (as the title suggests!).
Print Run
Literary agents Laura Zats and Erik Hane dive into what agenting is like, why books matter, and whatever else is on their minds. They often discuss the social ramifications of the industry and publishing trends.
Authors Sunyi Dean and Scott Drakeford bring on guests to chat about how publishing really works and how to maintain an author career. They’re not shy about getting into the nitty-gritty topics that are often swept under the rug.
Freelance editors Carly Hayward and Jeni Chappelle dissect movies with an eye for storytelling and novel writing. Their episodes are based on helpful themes like "antagonists," "omniscient narrators," "scene structure," and more.
The Shit No One Tells You About Writing
Author Bianca Marais and literary agents Carly Watters and Cece Lyra critique queries and interview authors. They also have episodes where authors can phone in and get comp suggestions from a librarian.
Editor/author Elise Volkman and writer Miraya Engelage discuss drafts, querying, and everything in between. They often critique queries with a guest literary agent and first pages from an editorial perspective.
Editor Allison Alexander, writer Emma Maione, and academic Christiana Jones nerd out about the worldbuilding in shows, movies, and books, exploring creative techniques writers can use in their own stories.
Authors Dan Wells, Howard Tayler, Mary Robinette Kowal, and Erin Roberts, as well as agent DonWon Song give writing craft advice. This podcast has been going on for a long time, so there's plenty of content to dive into!
